Lake Winnipesaukee
For the second straight weekend the water level on New Hampshire's largest lake rose rapidly, reaching seven inches above the full level, as the 44,586 acre lake was used as a giant reservoir to prevent flooding in downstream communities.
On Saturday, for the first time since 1984, sand bags were placed atop the Lakeport Dam, which regulates the lake level, in order to allow it to hold back even more water.
Four inches of rain fell in the Lakes Region over the weekend, causing flooding problems for homes near Jewett Brook in Laconia, and raising water levels substantially in two smaller lakes south of Winnipesaukee, 4,264 acre Lake Winnisquam and 200-acre Silver Lake, through which the Winnipesaukee River runs.
