Iowa Lakes
The Governor of Iowa will ask the Legislature for a $50 million package aimed at cleaning up rivers and lakes in the state, and will include a no-interest loan program for local communities to improve water treatment.
The governor said his water quality program is the beginning of a long-term effort to deal with impaired waterways. He offered no price tag or timeline.
This is a problem that has developed over 30 or 40 years, the package will try to put enough resources behind the effort to get the momentum started.
Iowa officials were encouraged by signs that local governments are beginning to recognize and deal with the problem. They pointed specifically to an effort in Storm Lake, where private donors and state and local government agencies have contributed money for watershed improvement and a lake dredging project. http://www.iowadnr.com
