Lake Superior Conservation
A major step forward in efforts to establish a National Marine Conservation Area on Lake Superior looks headed in a positive direction. It comes with the signing of an agreement in principal for the future transfer of the lake bed and lands in the designated area, from the province to federal control.
The proposed Marine Conservation Area would cover the area from Thunder Cape at the tip of the Sleeping Giant to Bottle Point, just east of Terrace Bay in Canada.
When it's finally created, it will become the largest such conservation area in Canada. The two senior levels of government will now work on details of a final agreement to protect the designated water and lands. Those discussions will include First Nations in the region on their role in the management and operation of the Conservation area.
