China's Drinking Water
Nine out 10 of Chinese cities rely on polluted groundwater, the government said yesterday after a year in which its devastated environment has been under constant scrutiny. The problem of organic and inorganic pollutants in the groundwater was serious and spreading. Rivers, lakes and other water sources in China have been in the news on almost a daily basis this year. Chemical spills, drought and overpopulation are all causes for concern in this rapidly developing country.
Some 70 per cent of all China's drinking water and 40 per cent of the water used for irrigation is groundwater, which is a major environmental issue along with the daily news of degradation of the country's rivers.
