Lake Erie

At least 8.9 billion gallons of untreated sewage flows yearly into Lake Erie and the rivers that feed it during storms that overwhelm sewer systems . The output is as if almost 2.5 billion toilets flushed simultaneously into the lake, a study reports.

The report on the overflows are inconsistent, the study includes records from the state and 11 communities along the lake. As the MLPC has stated in the past, populations expanding and spreading along the waterfront have a direct effect on the watershed. In this case Lake Erie will be unable to clean the toxins and byproducts that come from human development from the shoreline and beyond.
