New England Water
A New England water provider is warning of potential shortages unless new sources are found, triggering debates that could undermine growth in the future.
The Kent County Water Authority was created in 1946 by the General Assembly and provides public water to West Warwick, Coventry, East Greenwich and West Greenwich and parts of four other communities. It draws more than 80 percent of its supply from the Scituate Reservoir, while the remainder comes from a well field in East Greenwich.
In recent years, watering and car washing have strained pumps, depleted storage tanks and prompted restrictions on outdoor water use. An engineering study found that daily water demand will exceed the levels projected for 2025 in just five years.
