Iowa Water

The relationship between Iowa livestock and water will once again be big environmental topics at the Statehouse in January. Lawmakers, who open the 2006 session next week, face proposed regulations for factory farms and a 50 million dollar plan to clean up Iowa's waterways.

The DNR in Iowa has asked the Environmental Protection Committee to take up rules allowing it to prohibit some livestock operations near public land and water resources. This issue will be presented to lawmakers and the public.

The Legislature will be asked for the money to clean up rivers and lakes by the Governor. The effort would focus on watershed protection, lake restoration and funding for communities to upgrade water treatment plants. Other DNR priorities in the state include increasing the number of nonresident hunting licenses and requiring life jackets for children under 13 years old. http://www.governor.state.ia.us/
