Lake Bolac
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in Australia is investigating a large eel kill in Victoria's Lake Bolac.
Several hundred eels have washed up on the shores of Lake Bolac, following last years wash up across Victoria. A clean up operation is under way to remove the dead eels from around the popular recreational lake.
The EPA's John Williamson says they were alerted to the large kill on Monday by local residents, and he believes the eels may have been dead for at least a week.
Initial tests indicate warm water and high levels of salinity may have contributed to the kill, but initial tests show no signs of pollution. The water level of the lake is believed to be at a record low. Last year authorities were unable to determine the cause of eel kills at 14 southern Victorian lake sites. Learn more.
