Great Lakes Beaches
The US Supreme Court has decided not to consider whether people have a right to walk along private property on the Great Lakes shoreline. Which means the beaches will remain open to the public. Michigan's highest court ruled last year that beach walking is a right.
The court decided the area between the water and the ordinary high water mark on shore is accessible to everyone under the common-law doctrine of natural resources. About 60% of Great Lakes shoreline property is privately owned. Learn about other Supreme Court decisions.
