Iowa Boating

The Iowa Natural Resources Commission approved a nighttime speed limit of 25 mph from a half-hour after sunset to sunrise on all Dickinson County lakes. That move was supported by residents of the Iowa Great Lakes vacation area to improve safety. A legislative rules panel must still approve the limit.

Lake Delhi near Manchester is the only other Iowa lake with such a limit, restricting night speeds to 10 mph. Boat accidents are relatively rare at the heavily traveled Okoboji lakes, and night accidents are even less frequent. But, when Perry dentist Michael Brosnahan died last August in a hit-and-run collision on West Okoboji Lake at 2 a.m., more people began urging a night speed limit on the lake. Boat Safety Link.
