Impaired Waters

Wisconsin is adding 45 lakes, streams and beaches to its impaired waters list for the federal government, while taking seven off the list.

Added to the list are Maslowski Beach in Ashland, Barker’s Island Inner Beach in Superior and Brule River State Forest Beaches two and three. The three year-old Great Lakes monitoring program is helping residents determine what beaches have high bacteria levels or what lakes and streams have too much sediment from farm run-off to make it safe for swimming and fishing. In all, 643 Wisconsin lakes, streams ans beaches are on the impaired list that gets sent to the federal government after a 30 day public comment period. One positive development is that of the 643 names on the list, 233 have problems with high levels of mercury in the fish. That's 26 fewer lakes with mercury problems than two years ago.
