Lake Michigan
The water supply from Lake Michigan is not as unlimited as it looks. It's hard to fathom the depth of the potential problem, especially when you stand on the shore of the vast blue expanse of the lake.
So, Illinois is beginning a campaign of study and education to find out how quickly a growing population is using up water and to educate people about it.
Lake Michigan doesn't assure a endless water supply for the near future. The area around the lake has steady population growth and it is not clear how much water is needed to take care of that growth. The first year of the study and education campaign is getting more than a million dollars in state money.
Advocates believe a regional study is needed and many know there's not enough water to be digging wells without understanding where that water's coming from.
