Wetlands

Although their usefulness is not always apparent to everyone, wetlands play an important role in any ecosystem. But, wetlands have often been filled in for agricultural land, urban expansion, or even garbage dumps. It has been estimated that wetlands in the U.S. once comprised approximately 70 million hectares. Today, less than one-third of this area remains.
