Clear Lakes
Clear Lake, one of Iowa's top tourist spots, is launching a $25 million cleanup project that should help the lake purify itself.
After years of planning how to reverse the damage done by decades of farm and yard runoff, local residents and leaders hope that visibility in Iowa's third-largest natural lake will begin to improve. They've teamed with the state to set up a massive dredging project expected to cut pollution by two-thirds at the west end of the lake.
The lake boosts the local economy by $60 million each year despite being on the state's list of seriously polluted waterways. Iowa State University researchers predict cleaner water would mean another $30 million a year to the local economy.
