Migration
White pelicans are stopping at Lake Babcock in Nebraska as they continue their migration south.
More and more of the birds are stopping as they migrate to the Gulf Coast so the group keeps growing. Flocks of a few hundred birds are not unusual. The highest count on record in Nebraska for a flock of pelicans was 2,100 at Lake McConaughy in 1998.
Lake Babcock is the desirable habitat of aquatic vegetation where they can rest, forage and prepare for the journey south.
American white pelicans can reach 62 inches in length and 108 inches from wing tip to wing tip. Adults are mainly white with black wing tips, yellow feet, unfeathered yellow throat and dull, yellow bill. Immature pelicans are a duskier color and have gray bills.
