Stormwater Runoff

Pollution from stormwater runoff can be controlled, follow these tips to help.

# Don't fertilize your lawn if rain is predicted, and don't water a yard immediately after treating it with chemicals.

# Don't feed geese and ducks. Attracting unnaturally high populations of waterfowl can result in water bodies contaminated with their waste.

# Use as little product as possible, then sweep, rather than hose, excess fertilizers, pesticides and clippings off driveways, sidewalks and porches.

# When doing yard work or construction, cover piles of materials with a tarp to reduce erosion.

# Drain down your backyard pool before adding seasonal chemicals in the fall, rather than draining the treated water.

# Remove pet waste and dispose of it in the trash, not in gutters or sewer drains.

# Use environmentally friendly products such as water-based paints, nontoxic alternatives to pesticides and phosphorus-free soaps whenever possible.

# Soak up oil and antifreeze spills from pavement with kitty litter, then sweep it up and dispose of it in the trash.
