Lake Michigan Shoreline

A plan to return Indiana's Lake Michigan shoreline back to its natural state from scoria piles is progressing slowly-it could take decades to complete. A few congressmen are spearheading a plan to recapture as much as 75 percent of the northwest Indiana shoreline, connected by biking and hiking trails.

Portage is building its first public beach on land donated to the National Parks Service by the former National Steel Corporation. US Steel is cooperating in research into a possible environmental cleanup needed to make 200 acres on the west side of the company's Gary works usable for the greenway.

The plan also includes adding a boardwalk in Whiting and housing and recreational development in the East Chicago Marina.
