Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will try to reclaim popular Lake 20 at the Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area as the first step to improving water quality in the 51-acre lake. Lake 20 has experienced blue-green algal blooms, which have lead to closing the lake to swimming and other activities in the water.
The Commission, Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are working together to improve water quality and eliminate or decrease blue-green algal blooms. The process will remove unwanted fish species and the lake will later be restocked with bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish.
The lake will be closed to the public and liquid alum, which will precipitate phosphorus out of the water column and bind phosphorus to sediment at the bottom of the lake, will be applied to impede the growth of blue-green algae in the lake.
