Lake Nicaragua
Lake Nicaragua or Cocibolca, is located in Nicaragua. It is the largest lake in Central America, the 20th largest lake in the world. The lake has an elevation of 105 ft above sea level and reaches a depth of 84 ft. The lake is connected to the Caribbean Sea by the San Juan River.
Lake Nicaragua, despite being a freshwater lake, contains sharks and tuna, which are fully adapted to freshwater life. Scientists thought the sharks in Lake Nicaragua were a separate species until they discovered that Bull Sharks were jumping the rapids, much like salmon, to enter the lake.
The lake holds Ometepe and Zapatera, which are both volcanic islands, as well as the archipelago of the Solentiname Islands. Considerable concern has been expressed about the ecological condition of Lake Nicaragua. An environmental assessment study found that half of water sources sampled were seriously polluted by sewage.
