Algae in Nebraska

Nebraska has issued a new health alert for one lake and continued alerts for two other lakes because of toxic blue-green algae blooms. The new alert is for Harlan County Lake in south-central Nebraska.

Health alerts remain in effect for Fremont Lake No. 20, in east-central Nebraska, and Carter Lake, which is northeast of downtown Omaha and is shared by Nebraska and Iowa. Those alerts have been in place since early May. The state will be sampling 44 public recreational lakes through September.

Signs will be posted at the lakes to advise caution, and the swimming beaches at Fremont Lake No. 20 and Harlan County Lake will be closed.
