Snakes and Lakes

gartersnake.jpg

Snakes live under rocks and other debris along the shoreline of lakes, others spend much of their time in the water. Snakes feed on a variety of species such as frogs, tadpoles, fishes, crayfish, worms and insects. Snakes usually lay tough-shelled eggs in decaying vegetation or loose soil along the shore. Others, such as the common water snake and gartersnake give birth to their young.

In North America the only true aquatic venomous snake is the Cottonmouth. Some common snakes found along lakes include the Northern Water Snake, Green Water Snake, Queen Snake, Diamond-backed Water Snake, Mud Snake and the Rainbow Snake.
