Record Outbreak of Blue-Green Algae
Forty-eight lakes in Quebec, Canada including Lake Memphremagog have had blue-green algae blooms this summer and hundreds of residents are without water as a result.
Residents who do not get water from the municipal system, and draw their water from the lakes, are not to boil the lake water to treat it because it would still be unsafe to use. The Quebec government presented a $12 million dollar plan to deal with algae outbreaks. The Bloc Quebecois has asked the federal government to ban phosphates in detergents as one way to control the problem.
