Heavy Flooding Across the Midwest

Lakes, rivers and streams are overflowing with water in many Midwestern states. Thunderstorms have pounded parts of the Midwest and the Plains causing mudslides, washing out bridges and flooding towns. At least 12 people have died. Remnants of Tropical Storm Erin dumped heavy rain in southwestern Missouri, leaving the town of Pleasant Hope temporarily cut off after some areas got 15 inches of rain in a four-hour period.

Touring southwestern Wisconsin's devastation, Gov. Jim Doyle's entourage visited Gays Mills, where the Kickapoo River crested at 17 feet and left the downtown in waist-deep water. Weekend storms left six dead in southeastern Minnesota; one man was still missing. Heavy rains also caused flooding in Iowa.
