Illinois Approves Great Lakes Pact

Illinois is the second state to sign the agreement designed to protect the Great Lakes. Governor Rod Blagojevich has signed House Bill 375. The interstate compact that will restrict how much water can be withdrawn from the Great Lakes.

Each of the seven Great Lake states would also have to develop a water conservation and efficiency program. For the legislation to become law each Great Lake state must approve the compact.

So far, Minnesota has passed a bill. Legislation is pending in Indiana, Michigan and New York. Illinois state officials say they expect bills in the other states to pass. The compact is an important step to protect Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and other Great Lakes for future generations.
