Lake Kivu

Can Lake Kivu become a major tourist destination, and help Rwanda's struggling economy? Time will tell.

Lake Kivu is one of the Great Lakes of Africa. It lies on the border between Congo and Rwanda, and is a part of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Kivu empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika.

The lake covers 1,040 square miles and is 1,574 feet deep. The lake is surrounded by mountains, and is the home of several islands.
