Powerboat Ban

High water levels at 21 lakes in Indiana have prompted a ban on motorized watercraft going into the Labor Day weekend. The DNR lifted watercraft restrictions on three lakes that had first been issued Aug. 24 following heavy rains. The ban on several of the area's most-popular lakes could last well into September.

The restrictions are needed on the lakes in Noble, Steuben and LaGrange counties because wakes could send water onto property. Also. the high water conceals piers or other debris that could be struck by boaters unable to see them.

While the lakes remain open for swimming, sailing, canoeing and other activities, the restrictions could have a ripple effect on local economies.

Lakes with motorized watercraft bans are:

In LaGrange County: Dallas, Witmer, Westler, Hackenberg, Messick, Big Turkey, Adams, Oliver, Olin and Martin.

In Noble County: Waldron, Steinbarger, Tamarack and Jones.

In Steuben County: Big Turkey, Crooked, James, Snow, Jimmerson, Little Otter and Big Otter.

The restrictions on Skinner and Sylvan lakes and Lake George have been lifted.
