Isle Royale and VHS

Caretakers of Isle Royale National Park have taken steps to protect it from VHS. Boats will be prohibited from emptying ballast tanks near Isle Royale unless their contents have been treated to kill invasive species.

The order was designed to prevent water contaminated with the virus VHS (viral hemorrhagic septicemia) from being dumped near the island, which is home to 12 types of trout including the rare coaster brook trout. The order will mostly affect Canadian vessels and oceangoing ships that call on Thunder Bay.
