Shawnee Mission Lake
For the first time in the Shawnee Mission Lake’s 50-year history, people were given a rare opportunity to clean the accumulated trash while the 120-lake has been drawn down eight feet so improvements can be made along the shoreline.
Johnson County Park and Recreation District officials already had registered more than 150 volunteers as part of the Keep Kansas City Beautiful effort. The goal was to gather two tons of trash at the lake, which gets heavy traffic from Kansas City.
Projects targeted for Shawnee Mission Park Lake which are designed to improve access to the water.
Main goals:
Reshaping the dam to incorporate a trail for fishermen.
Installing new marina docks.
Reconstructing the off-leash dog beach to include an access route that complies with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Removing silt and building a wetland on the east side.
