Wastewater to Fill Swimming Pools?

Lawmakers in parts of California may soon require some businesses to conserve water by using treated wastewater for landscaping, laundry and other large-scale commercial uses.

Some city councils around the state are scheduled to consider an ordinance that would make selected residential, commercial and industrial developments use effluent in places where the treated water is not likely to be consumed by people or animals. Residents expressed concern about using water that in unsuitable for drinking to irrigate farmland, to wash diapers and tablecloths, or to water plants at housing developments.

So far there has been no evidence to suggest anyone would get sick if the ordinances were passed. State water quality standards declare that wastewater could legally be used to fill a swimming pool.
