Explosion Closes Lake Springfield

Lake Springfield in Illinois is closed to boaters while an assessment of damage is done following an explosion at Springfield’s power plant. The closure is meant to keep boats from disturbing oil flushed into the lake during the firefighting effort, but the water remains safe to drink.

The explosion took place in a brick building that houses the city's three main generators. The explosion was due to an electrical failure in a transformer that converts electricity from 20,000 to 69,000 volts.
