Human Waste and Lakes

Human waste becomes a problem anywhere people gather in remote areas. Here in the Midwest the Boundary Waters or Sylvania Wilderness come to mind as where this situation can occur. Human waste is heavily contaminated with bacteria and poses numerous health risks, which also makes cleanup a difficult issue along lakes. Because of the health concerns, park maintenance people cannot be routinely ordered to clean up human waste.

The Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area in Washington State is slowly becoming an outdoor toilet, and people are worried this pristine area is in big trouble.
