Does The Clean Water Act Work?
Did you know? Indiana's factories discharged nearly 400 million pounds of pollutants into Lake Michigan during 2007. Facilities dumped more than 10 times the amount of certain human carcinogens, such as hexavalent chromium, then when the Clean Water Act was signed into law. They also unloaded more than 227 million pounds of dissolved solids, such as salt. That's more than 15 times the amount released in 1979. Nearly 30 pounds of mercury was also dumped into Lake Michigan this year alone.
