Minnesota's New Water Quality Rules
The Citizens' Board of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is set to vote on a revision of the state's water quality rules. A few cities worry they'll have to spend more money to treat wastewater. Some believe the rules will make it easier to allow certain lakes to become more not less degraded.
The agency is setting a limit on phosphorus in the lake itself, not just in the effluent. The limits vary, depending on where the lake is located. In the north the limits are more stringent than in the central part of the state. And lakes in the south and west have a much laxer limit due to the farms that surround the lakes.
