Nestle and Watersheds

Nestle was under fire at a congressional hearing about whether the company continued to pump groundwater from its Michigan wells this summer as aquifers fell to record low levels. Nestle Waters North America scientists believe its Mecosta County pumping facilities aren’t hurting water flow and that stream levels in the area aren’t unusual.

A long running battle between Nestle and environmentalists in the county reached Capitol Hill, with Rep. Dennis Kucinich, convening a House Oversight subcommittee hearing to discuss the environmental impact of bottled water operations.

The meeting will help determine whether the government needs to be more involved in decisions about operations like Nestle’s which under a current agreement draws 218 gallons a minute, or as much as 114 million gallons a year.
