Wisconsin to Pass Great Lakes Compact

Wisconsin lawmakers plan to introduce a bill in late January to approve the Great Lakes Compact, two years after Jim Doyle and seven other Governors from around the Midwest and New York signed it.

A group of four state legislators has been working on the bill that would not only adopt the compact, but would also include a water conservation management plan. The legislation involves addressing water conservation for communities that straddle the Great Lakes watershed, determining withdrawals and establishing a permitting process.

The group took on drafting the bill after a special legislative committee on the Great Lakes Compact disbanded in September. Only Wisconsin and Ohio remain as states yet to pass the Great Lakes Water Resources Compact.
