Alabama's Lakes
Recent rains in Alabama have improved conditions in some state lakes, where the drought has threatened drinking water supplies.
Weiss Lake was close to dropping so low that Centre, Alabama might not be able to draw drinking water. But, heavy rains have raised the lake's level to above the normal winter level.
Recent rains have helped lakes along the Coosa River, such as Weiss Lake and Lake Logan Martin. Federal officials allowed the power company to bring water levels in those lakes above the normal mark because of the drought and to improve chances there will be enough water available to fill the lakes in the spring.
Other lakes, including Lake Martin and Lake Harris, continue to show signs of the drought, which left docks sitting on dry land as water levels fell to record lows during the summer.
