Nuclear Reactors and Lakes
Nuclear reactors across the U.S. could be forced to shut down because drought is drying up lakes and other bodies of water that supply power plants with the cooling water they need to operate. The shutdowns could lead to higher electric bills for millions of people or even blackouts.
An analysis of 104 nuclear reactors found that 24 are in areas experiencing the most severe levels of drought in the south; most of the reactors are built on the shores of lakes and rivers.
