Brookings Report-Great Lakes
A $20 billion stalled clean up plan by the Federal Government to clean toxic hotspots, restore fish and wildlife habitat, end exotic species introductions and sewage overflows would go to great lengths to bolster cities along the Great Lakes according to a Brookings report.
Money spent on Great Lakes restoration could double the economic gains across the region. The study shows it could lead to an economic revival for the Great lakes region, adding some $80 to $100 billion to the region’s economy in increased land values, more tourism, better fishing and increased recreation options and reduced environmental protection costs.
Duluth, Minnesota could see $200 to $300 million dollars in economic benefits, while Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee and Cleveland could see $3-4 billion in benefits.
