Spiny Water Flea Study

A professor from Queen’s University believes reducing the spread of some invasive species into our lakes could be as simple as asking boaters and fishers to dry out their equipment after use. Dr. Arnott’s current research focuses on the spiny water flea, an invertebrate predator that has invaded more than 100 North American lakes since the early 1980s. The problem with the spiny water flea is that production of zooplankton in the warm, upper layer of water in invaded lakes was reduced by almost 70 percent, compared to lakes that are not invaded.
