The Great Lakes Economy

Invasive species are causing the destruction of the Great Lakes ecosystem, and now over $200 million dollars in damage to the local economies. The Center for Aquatic Conservation at the University of Notre Dame released this study. In 2006, the losses to sport and commercial fishing, tourism and water treatment facilities were staggering. The authors of the study believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg in lost opportunity costs for local economies that rely on the Great Lakes.
