Where does the water in the Great Lakes go?
How much water do we remove from the Great Lakes for use in food, ethanol, household chemicals, farming and paper products? A new study shows us that at least 70% of the water used for irrigation and livestock is not returned to the watershed after use.
Seven consumptive water-use categories were selected for the study: domestic and public supply, industrial, electric power, irrigation, livestock, commercial, and mining. Consumptive water use is water that is evaporated, transpired, incorporated into products or crops, consumed by humans or livestock, or otherwise removed from the immediate environment.
