Cargo Sweeping on the Great Lakes
According to a new study by the EPA and U.S. Coast Guard, 500 tons of debris is swept into the Great Lakes by ships each year. Iron ore, coal, limestone, cement, salt and grains are all dumped into the lakes by cargo carriers.
A practice of cargo sweeping is littering the bottom of the lakes with harmful metals that can end up on dinner plates of families that ingest fish from the lakes.
