VHS Ruling Delayed
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is delaying the establishment of specific conditions for the importation and interstate movement of live fish to prevent the spread of viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS). The interim rule will now be implemented on Jan. 9, 2009, instead of Nov. 10, 2008. This delay will allow APHIS time to consider comments and make adjustments to the rule that may be necessary for successful implementation.
The interim rule will continue to permit the interstate movement of live VHS-regulated fish from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
