Mercury in Fish
The amount of mercury in fish across much of the Midwest has increased over the last ten years. Studies of lakes in Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Great Lakes show increased levels of mercury in fish such as walleye and northern pike. The rise in mercury seems to becoming from the increase of coal-fired plants overseas in China, and other rapidly growing economies. It is estimated that half the pollution that is effecting the lakes comes from outside the Midwest.
