Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement

The U.S. and Canada will begin negotiations on updating the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. The agreement has not had changes to it since 1987, it was first signed in 1972. New steps will be added to help the Great Lakes fight climate change, invasive species and pollution.

Lakes In Canada

Northern lakes in Canada are being impacted by climate change, as the lakes remain ice free for longer stretches during the year. The lakes also have a higher rate of algae growth. But, some lakes in Canada are showing lower levels of mercury and PCBs, which is good news for fish populations.
